Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty Renamed
AONBs have recently been renamed to National Landscapes. This change comes into effect to increase awareness of the national significance these landscapes hold. It positions them in greater likeness to National Parks, to highlight their important contribution to the country.
It also aims to increase overall public awareness, in particular strengthening engagement across all generations, to connect them to the natural world and the country's heritage.
'This is a significant milestone for the UK and the next step in fully realising the National Landscapes’ vision to be the leading exemplars of how thriving, diverse communities can work with and for nature in the UK: restoring ecosystems, providing food, storing carbon to mitigate the effects of climate change, safeguarding against drought and flooding, whilst also nurturing people’s health and wellbeing.'
